THIS IS HOW IT’S DONE
As far as tipping, at least for me, this is how it goes down;
If the person that takes us to the table also takes our drink order, we’re still at 15%. If not, -2%
If our server arrives before I’m done that drink. We’re still at 15%. If not, -2%
If I have to look at an empty glass more than twice, -5%
If the orders comes within minutes of each other (or preferably the exact same time), we’re still at 15%. If I have to stare at my food while my friends wait for their orders, -5%
If a server ever asks me “So how is everything?” while I’m shoveling a mouthful of food down my gullet, -5%
If we have to stack our own dirty plates and push them to the side of the table, -2%
I’ll gladly pay a 15% tip, but it has to be earned. I don’t think my criteria are unreasonable. I regularly tip 15%. But when I don’t its usually due to some violation of the above rules.
